Relationships

Throughout the Merchant of Venice, we are acquainted with many different relationship dynamics, ranging from close, brotherly friendships to strained father and daughter relationships to mutual friendships. This is something that the play does well, showing us so many angles of human interaction and human closeness.
Relationships~
shylock~portia and other dynamics
The relationship between Portia and Shylock comes to light during the trial (around act 4, scene 1) They start butting heads trying to defend their sides of the flesh deal, in a heroine and antagonist type of interaction. It’s one where there isn’t much substance to the actual dynamic, they don't have history or feelings for each other, except for a slight mutual dislike as after all they were debating in court, and Portia gave him a teasing feel of victory before completely shutting him down and forcing his christian conversion. So from this we can just gather that their relationship in specific isn’t particularly existent.
Some other relationship dynamics Portia and Shylock have with other characters from the play~ Portia and bassanio ~ the main love dynamic of the play, their relationship is one of devoted, reverent, mutual romantic love. Portia and Nerissa ~ they’re very close both through Nerissa serving as Portia’s lady in waiting and as a reliable, trusted friend. Shylock and Jessica ~ The father and daughter dynamic of this relationship is a controlling one on Shylock's end, being strict on his daughter which is part of the reason why she runs away in act 2, scene 6. Shylock and Antonio ~ these two share a grudge, constant insults, hostility and coldness linger in their relationship, their differences in business practices and religious beliefs put strain on their relationship too as Christians were pretty well known to dislike Jewish people.
